"It's
easy to be miserable. Being happier
is tougher - and cooler."
Radiohead
is one of the most non-commercial
bands to achieve well-deserved worldwide
acclaim. The soundscapes they create
have a poignancy and an edge that
many an alienated soul can relate
to.
Radiohead - The Beginning
Sometime in 1982, Thom Yorke then
14, asked Colin Greenwood to join
his new band with Ed O'Brien. Thom
and Colin had previously been in a
school punkband called TNT. Phil Selway,
another friend from the Abingdom public
school, became their drummer and then
Colin's brother, Jonny Greenwood joined
to complete the band. They named themselves
On A Friday and made their debut in
1987 at Jericho's Tavern in their
hometown, Oxford.
On A Friday booked gigs frequently
and a variety of record labels became
interested, with EMI eventually signing
the band. After a show at The Venue
they got their first review. Though
the review was mostly positive, it
prompted them to concede that their
name was at best, mundane. They decided
to swap it for Radiohead, the title
of a song on the Talking Heads' True
Stories album.
From their first smash Creep through
their acclaimed The Bends and OK Computer
albums to the unusual turns of Kid
A and Amnesiac, Radiohead have always
done things their own way, building
an impressive career with no lack
of integrity.

"i read that the gnostics believe when we
are born we are forced to forget where we
have come from in order to deal with the trauma
of arriving in this life. i thought this was
really fascinating. its like the river of
forgetfulness. [Amnesiac] may have been recorded
at same time as Kid a but it comes from a
different place i think. i used to listen
to it on my laptop on tour supposedly trying
to find a running order but really because
i was so happy to have something we had done
that nobody else had heard and was our secret.
it sounds like finding an old chest in someones
attic with all these notes and maps and drawings
and descriptions of going to a place you cannot
remember. thats what i think anyway." -- Thom
Yorke

"Do
you really know where you are going? Do you have a
plan of action to take the kinks out of your road
to the future?.. you can reach and find happiness.
You can reach for that plain peace-of-mind which you
desire. all you have to do is turn the key and open
the door." -- Radiohead
